Summary

Sensory characteristics and motor function analysis are used in various situations such as equipment design and operational evaluation. However, there are very few opportunities to learn measurement methods. This course offers students the opportunity to learn measurement of sensory characteristics through psychological experiments and to perform motor function analysis to deepen their understanding of human-characteristics and individual variations and diversity in motor function.

Course Contents

1. Lectures

  • ・What is sensation?
  • ・What is motor function?
  • ・Sensory-characteristics measurement
  • ・Motor function analysis

2. Practical Training

Structure and Schedule

Lectures will be given using books and reference material specified in the package. Progress will be presented in seminar style followed by written submission as a report. Experiments will take place according to the procedure specified in the package. Reports will be made once per week and meetings will be called as needed.

Course Option

Exercise problems related to the theme will be decided upon through private consultation with each student

Course Objectives

It is important to understand sensory organs, the principles of measuring devices, and the appropriate control of the environment in which measurements take place when measurements of sensory characteristics are made. When performing motor function analysis, it is important to understand motor mechanisms, the principles of measuring devices and the appropriate control of the environment in which measurements take place. The focus of this course is to have students conduct and experience measurements and find relevancy in the basic knowledge acquired from the textbook and other reference materials.

Fundamental skills required for the course

It is desirable that students to have a basic knowledge on mathematics.

Assessment of academic achievement

Scores will be given on a scale of 1 to 5 for the items listed below. An average score of 3.5 is considered a passing score.
  1. (1) Level of understanding of sensation and motor function
  2. (2) Level of understanding of sensory characteristics and motor function analysis
  3. (3) Final presentation and report
