Ceramics in Medical Therapy

printout

Summary

Ceramics are used in the treatment of body tissues such as bones, teeth and joints. Students will acquire synthesis techniques in bioceramics and analytical methods for its use in biological systems, as well as learn the function of biological organisms and the methods of synthesizing ceramics at normal temperature and pressure.

Course Contents

1. Lectures

  • ・What is ceramics?
  • ・What is biomaterial?
  • ・Synthesis methods for bioceramics
  • ・Property analysis methods for bioceramics
  • ・Ceramics produced by biological organisms

2. Practical Training

・Synthesis of bioceramics
・Synthesis of ceramics through processes that imitate biological organisms
・Biological property analysis for bioceramics

Structure and Schedule

Lectures will be given using texts and reference material assigned as required in the package. Progress will be presented in seminar style followed by written submission as a report. Experiments will take place according to the procedure specified in the package. Reports will be made once per week and meetings will be called as needed.

Course Option

Exercise problems related to the theme will be decided upon through private consultation with each student

Course Objectives

For the synthesis of ceramic material it is important to carefully control composition, compound ratio and heat treatment conditions. Through practical exercises, students will make material with their own hands, measure properties and relate their experience to the basic knowledge acquired through lectures and texts.

Fundamental skills required for the course

It is desirable that students to have a basic knowledge of material science or inorganic chemistry.

Assessment of academic achievement

Scores will be given on a scale of 1 to 5 for the items listed below. An average score of 3.5 is considered a passing score.
  1. (1) Level of understanding of the bioceramics synthesis
  2. (2) Level of understanding of evaluation and analysis methods for bioceramics
  3. (3) Level of understanding of the structure and function of bioceramics
  4. (4) Final presentation and report
